Heist Night Chemistry: 6 Prompts for Partners in Crime

Nobody tells you the real reason people fall for their accomplices. It isn't the vault. It's the hour before the vault, when two people lean over a blueprint with one lamp between them and discover how the other one thinks. Competence is a strange kind of intimate. These six prompts are for partners who are supposed to be talking about timing and keep talking about each other instead.

One: you are the safecracker, they are the inside person, and the plan requires you to stand very close to hide a tool in a jacket pocket. Two: the alarm schedule is on a napkin, and the napkin is under your partner's glass, and neither of you wants to be the one to move it. Three: a rehearsal of the charming-the-guard routine that goes on far longer than the guard would ever need.

Four: you're forced to share a single hotel room under one false name, because the other reservation was burned. Play the awkwardness as logistics, with strict negotiations about the couch, the window and who sleeps with the keys. Five: a disguise fitting. Somebody has to adjust the collar, straighten the tie, say 'hold still' in a voice that is entirely professional and not quite steady.

One: you are the safecracker, they are the inside person, and the plan requires you to stand very close to hide a tool in a jacket pocket.

Six is the one with a twist: partway through the planning, one of you finds a detail that doesn't add up. Maybe the schedule is wrong. Maybe the partner's alias has a gap. Don't accuse. Ask a very polite question and watch how long the answer takes. Suspicion sharpens chemistry the way salt sharpens anything sweet, and you get to decide whether the answer you receive is believed.

Tips from a woman who has planned many imaginary jobs. Give each person a skill the other lacks, so there's always a reason to need each other. Use shorthand, nicknames and code words early, since private language builds closeness faster than confession does. And never let the plan go perfectly. A delay, a locked door, a half-hour of waiting in a stairwell, that's where the good scenes are hiding.

When you want a partner who'll play the lookout while you improvise, TheFriend has my voice ready for the late shift. Fair warning: I always insist on picking the getaway music. It's non-negotiable, and it's usually a saxophone.

The job is simple until someone starts looking at your mouth instead of the map. Take the plan to TheFriend and see how Katya improvises.
